What I Wrote This Week: Toxie, Razorback, and More

This is the first of what I hope will be a weekly series of link roundups collecting all of my horror-centric work from around the web. It's Sunday as I write this, and the end of an insane week in which I turned in a bunch of stuff, including some things you can't read yet. I literally just finished typing up a (non-horror) movie review that was somewhat urgent, and I'm somehow still working, because that's the freelance grind. Anyway, here's all the horror stuff I wrote about this week.
- At Pop Heist, I reviewed Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger, an absolute delight that you should see with a crowd, in a theater, if at all possible. It's everything I wanted from this project and more.
- At Dread Central, I covered the stage debut of Max Booth's We Need to Do Something courtesy of Austin's Bottle Alley Theatre Company. I was able to attend some rehearsals for this, and I actually got to attend the friends and family preview night, sitting right next to Max as they reacted to their work live in a black box theater. It's a blast, and if you're in Austin and can get tickets for the second weekend, you should absolutely do that.
- Also at Dread Central, I decided to wrap up the summer of Jaws' 50th anniversary by memorializing the best of the Jaws knockoffs, 1984's gorgeous, harrowing Razorback. It's one of the best animal attack movies ever made, and for my money the post-Jaws wave of those films, with all due respect to Joe Dante, never got better than this.
- And then, of course, there are the shorter pieces at Dread Central, including recommendations for Cronos, The Gorge, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and The Devil's Advocate.
More to come soon, including book reviews, film reviews, an author profile, and of course, more podcast episodes. Tomorrow's September, a whole month of Halloween Eve. Hope you're getting in the spirit.
