Good Evening

My name's Matthew, and I'll be your host.
I'm a journalist, a critic, a member of the Horror Writers Association, a fiction writer, a cinephile, a sicko, a sometime film scholar, and yet another one of those lunatics launching a newsletter.
If you're here, that means you've probably been kind enough to follow me on a social media platform, or to read my reviews and articles across places like Dread Central, Pop Heist, The AV Club, Paste Magazine, and many more. You also might know me from my podcast, The Scares That Shaped Us, where I talk to writers way cooler than I am about the foundational horror stories in their lives.
However you got here, I'm glad you came.
This is a new venture for me, a mad experiment, an attempt to get deeper into this genre that I love, even more than my day job allows. Here you'll find reviews of everything from indie horror novels to short stories to weird things I find on YouTube to, yes, movies that I don't have the chance to write about elsewhere. You'll also find in-depth analysis and essays on classic horror, bonus audio from the podcast when we have it, maybe some special guests writing or talking once in a while, perhaps even some fiction. Maybe we do audio commentaries on slasher movies, maybe we rank the work of one of horror's finest directors, maybe we just ramble on about masks.
If it's horror, and it's on my mind, it's going here.
This, like The Scares That Shaped Us, is a labor of love for me, an attempt to dig deeper into horror that will also (hopefully) grow my audience. I'm your host, your writer, your producer, your curator, your janitor, every other job under the sun with these projects, and I do it for free. Therefore, you'll also find paid tiers for subscribers kind enough to kick a few bucks my way every month. Those paid tiers will come with content that you'll get before anyone else, and sometimes content that you'll get exclusively.
You're on the internet in 2025, you get how this works.
Whether you're here to read for free, here to subscribe at a paid level, or just here to look around for a second, I'm glad you came. I'll do my best to make it worth your while.
Now, dim the lights. The show's starting.
